It just so happens that every story and every universe has an underdog. A poor bastard that you know will screw things up but still wish to know how they'll do it. But no one can screw things up that badly, can they? No one can go from being the species that invented galaxy-wide FTL travel to being nearly extinct. Well it just so happens that the Othor can.
